I have tried both of these options over the last few years and both brought some level of success. Dropshipping can take longer to start to see a profit and the profit is usually lower than what you first think.
For example, you’re selling T-shirts on your dropshipping website. You sell a tee for $20 and it costs $5 to buy from the wholesaler. That’s $15 profit. Right? Not quite. Because you have your website fees, advertising costs and other potential expenses. Then, you have to sell a lot of tees to make a good income. Let’s break it down to a scenario where you want to earn $5000 a month before tax.
Let’s say the actual profit is $10 (it’s probably less, usually around 20-30% profit). You would need to make around 16 sales a day to actually make that much. That’s 485 sales a month, minimum. It might not sound like a lot of sales but if you don’t have the right product you might only sell 10 a week or month.
Affiliate marketing is a different ball game entirely. You still have start up costs such as website hosting and probably paid advertising depending on the way you want to go (you don’t need to use paid advertising but, it will potentially increase your sales).
The difference can be in the product you sell and the profit you can get. There are so many different affiliate programs out there that offer high profit that you can make $5000 a week, never mind a month. This is obviously the rare side of affiliate marketing but it is possible.
Let’s say you find a product on ClickBank, I don’t know, something around weight loss. The average affiliate payments is around $135. So, you would need to sell 1 or 2 of these a day to make your $5000 a month.
You will need to work a bit harder when it comes to creating content but for me, affiliate marketing has far greater potential to get you to your goals than dropshipping. I gave up my dropshipping business to focus more on high ticket affiliate marketing and I couldn’t be happier.
What you choose to do depends on where your strengths lie and how much capital you have to put into your new business. Whatever you decide, there are risks and only about 20% of people are actually successful in both of these online business models. Even less, around 1% get to earn the kind of money that will help you quit your job, buy a private jet and move into that mansion you keep eyeing up!
Just make sure you give it a go otherwise you will never break free from your boss.
